Product Name: Open Software Environment (OSE)
Description: Introducing the Open Software Environment--a roadmap to
open systems! The Open Software Environment (OSE) is an approach to
building open systems solutions. It's designed to help customers who
want to move to open systems but need help getting started. OSE is
delivered through PSO Consulting.
Target Markets: Fortune 500 Companies committed to open systems
operating in multivendor environments, interested in moving to open
systems while leveraging their existing systems, and needing assistance
in migrating from their current environment.
In late October, HP will introduce the Open Software Environment (OSE),
a "roadmap to open systems," to the U.S. press and industry
consultants. OSE helps customers who want the benefits of open systems
but need assistance in migrating from their current environment.
OSE DESCRIPTION
While many customers recognize the benefits of open systems, they often
run into roadblocks when they start to actually implement open systems.
For example, customers want to leverage their existing investments.
They also want to make sure that they choose the right standards and
products. OSE is designed to help customers address these challenges.
The Open Software Environment is an approach to building open systems
solutions. It focuses on people who build systems--application
developers and software architects. OSE provides specific guidelines
on how to build open applications that have lasting value.
OSE includes:
- A Framework--a reference model developed by HP to help customers
build their own, tailored software architecture.
- Design Guides--documented expertise on how to select the right
standards and products.
- A Process--steps that a customer can follow with their account team
to design their own quick start roadmap to open systems.
OSE covers key product areas such as CASE, database, User Interface and
Networking.
OSE is delivered through PSO Consulting. A quick start way to
introduce customers to the OSE concepts is through a 2-day OSE
workshop. Workshops are customized for each customer and can be used
early in the sales cycle to help customers plan their open software
solutions.
COMPETITIVE POSITIONING
OSE gives HP a competitive response to software architectures from
other systems vendors. Customers have two choices for their software
architectures. One choice is to adopt a hardware vendor's list of
products--a directive, "one-size-fits-all" approach. The other choice,
from HP, is the Open Software Environment. Here, the customer works
with HP to tailor their own architecture and then chooses products from
multiple vendors that fit their needs.
The HP approach is open and consultative. The competition's approach
is directive.
CUSTOMER BENEFITS
For new and installed base customers, OSE means:
- A Fast Start to Open Systems With OSE, customers can get started
quickly without having to wait years for all the standards and products
to be in place. At HP, we have been implementing and leading open
systems for years; customers can leverage our experience through OSE.
- Investment Protection OSE helps customers make the most of their
existing investments in applications. The approach is to build an open
system that leverages the hardware, software and people investments
that customers have already made; at the same time, OSE shows ways to
incorporate future, new technologies.
- Tailored Solutions There is no such thing as a single open software
architecture. Every customer's business needs, technology needs and
existing systems are unique. This is why, with OSE, customers can
design their own open software environment that is tailored for their
business.
Ideal accounts for OSE would be customers who are:
- Committed to open systems
- Operating in multi-vendor environments
- Fortune 500 accounts
- Interested in moving to open systems while still leveraging their
existing systems (eg: mainframe downsizing)
ROLLOUT OF OSE
OSE has been available for over a year in Europe. Now it is available
in the U.S. and will be rolled out to the rest of Americas and Asia
Pacific in early 1992.
Today, trained PSO consultants in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe,
Korea, Sinagpore, Australia and Japan are available to deliver OSE
workshops. If you have customers who might be interested in the Open
Software Environment, you can contact your local OSE consultant in the
PSO. For the names of these consultants and more information about
OSE, send a message to the IM Autoinfo under the subject "Index." The
hotline has an OSE Q&A, introduction paper and customer slideset to
accompany the introduction. Your sales center can also answer
questions about OSE.
In Europe, a customer slideset tailored to the European open systems
strategy is available on the Computer Systems Hotline under "OSEPITCH."
